Mullingar Recreational Amenity Funding

Mullingar to receive €200,000 in The Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme

Mullingar to receive €200,000 funding in the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme Minister for Rural and Community Development, Michael Ring announced €11 million under the 2018 Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme which provides funding for the development of new outdoor recreational infrastructure. The second phase of the Scheme is a joint initiative between the Government and Fáilte Ireland.

Mullingar is one of 78 projects to benefit from the government’s Action Plan for Rural Development and will see the development of a new slipway, walkway surface and parking at Newbrook, Mullingar. This development is planned for an area opposite Lidl in Patrick Street, Mullingar – starting beside Alan Bardon Motors and continues on the Royal Canal bank to a point before the new bridge over the canal from Mullingar Business Park onto the
Ballymahon road.

This new outdoor development will fill in a gap between the start of the Greenway at Newbrook and the end of Patrick Street, Mullingar. This area features both on the Blueway and Greenway in Mullingar and should prove a welcome enhancement to the growing use of these great outdoor recreational areas connecting to Mullingar from both the East and West and assist in enhancing Mullingar as an important central pivotal point for the growing
popularity of recreational tourism in Ireland. In the last year there has been significant growth in the presence of recreational off-road cyclists, walkers and runners and usage of our waterways by boating and other water craft, all taking advance of these amenities around Mullingar.

The Greenway between Mullingar and Athlone “The old rail and cycling trail” has proved very popular with recreational cyclists and walkers. In the summer of 2018 a Blueway Activity Centre at Harbour Bridge, Mullingar was launched by Waterways Ireland. In addition to providing additional facilities for visitors to Mullingar and the Westmeath area, this new addition will be a  benefit to locals to enjoy these outdoor recreational facilities in Mullingar.
