Lough Sheelin lies at a meeting point of Counties Westmeath, Meath and Cavan. Near the villages of Finnea and Mountnugent, and the town of Granard in Longford.
The river that flows into Lough Sheelin is River Inny, the lake is 7 km (4.3 mi) long, and has a surface area of between 1,855 and 1,900 hectares (4,580 and 4,700 acres).
