Here in the capital of the Midlands we have some of the best coarse and game fishing in Ireland. I would even go as far to say that we have some of the best in Europe when it comes to pike and wild brown trout fishing. Within a 30 mile radius we have some of the best Lakes and Rivers where Anglers can chill out, and catch some cracking fish. Fishing has changed over the years here in Westmeath, and we have moved with the times on the fishing scene. Our Lakes & Rivers around Mullingar are reeling in Anglers from all over the World. In 2010 I developed an Angling site, to let anglers know what was happening on the Angling scene around Mullingar and Westmeath. Since then there have been almost 500 separate items/articles averaging about 4 to 5 updates per week. Also the IFI have weekly reports on what’s happening across Westmeath and the greater Mullingar area.

The list of waters local and visiting Anglers have within casting distance is unbelievable here around Mullingar, and I am going to list just some of our top Angling venues. Take the Lakes for example, on your door step is Owel, Lene, Ennell, Derravaragh, Sheelin, Glore, just to name a few. The Rivers flowing through Westmeath and Mullingar are magical venues for both coarse and game Anglers. Just imagine stalking the Brosna River for really wild brown trout, or catching some super brownies on the fast water on the Inny.

We also have fantastic small rivers that produce great trout, but you have to know the area quite well to find these excellent waters. Also the Royal Canal is a real “Hot Spot” for coarse Anglers and access to all our lakes and rivers are excellent.

A lot of our Lakes have closed season for trout fishing, and normally it’s from March 1st – October 12th, although some club controlled waters differ, and this can be checked on line prior to fishing.

Coarse fishing is open all year round, and we get some great pike and perch fishing all year. Plus some local venues produce super tench, carp, and bream.

Most of our waterways in and around Mullingar are controlled by IFI and you will need a current Permit to fish the likes of Owel, Ennell, Derravaragh and the Inny and Brosna River. All information regarding this is up on my site. Some local waters are club controlled and you will need a day ticket to fish these waters. When you are planning a trip, just bang me an e-mail or ring and I will try my best to give you contact details for such Angling venues.

As mentioned Fishing is changing, and it’s very important that local and visiting anglers are up to date with what’s happening. If any angler needs more information on fishing around Mullingar just shout. I grew up in Riverside Bungalow, Springfield, Mullingar right next to the Brosna River, and the Royal Canal flows in front of my home place. All can be checked on www.midlandangling.com.

Tight lines and I leave you with a small Gallery of photographs from my days fishing around Mullingar. I started fishing very young on the Royal Canal as you can see from some of the photos.
