It’s not always easy to keep little ones amused, but luckily Mullingar has so much to offer for families, young and old!

Here we have listed a number of fantastic activities for all ages, in and around the town!



Visit the town park located in the centre of Mullingar and take a swim in the 25m indoor swimming pool. Public sessions held daily except Monday.

Take a boat out on the wonderful lakes around Mullingar. Boat Hire is available from Lilliput Boat Hire (April-Oct) Tel : 087-6492866.

For younger children, they will enjoy taking a pedal boat and exploring the lake shore. If you’d like to go fishing, local guides are available to take you to the best places.

Lilliput Adventure Centre

If you are feeling active, head to Lilliput Adventure Centre on the shores of Lough Ennell just ten minutes from the town centre. It’s a fabulous, unspoilt location where you can canoe, kayak, hill walk, rock climb, and take part in lots of fun group activities. Coderdojo is a global collaboration providing free and open learning to young people, especially in programming technology. They meet every Saturday from 12pm- 2pm and new members registration is on the first Saturday of the month. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult for the session.

Old Rail Trail

The Old Rail Trail is a rural route through the heart of the Irish midlands connecting Athlone with Mullingar and passing through the town of Moate. The route is 40km along a converted stretch of the former Midlands Great Western Railway and passes through rich fertile farmland away from the hustle of towns. A lovely way for families to spend the day.


Scragh Bog Nature Reserve

Scragh Bog Nature Reserve is the best illustration in Ireland of the transition from alkaline fen to acidic raised bog and one of the few remaining in Europe. It contains a large number of uncommon plants and insects which are rare in Europe, and the bog is rated as being of international importance. The greater part of the bog was purchased by the Irish Peatland Conservation Council with funds generously provided by the Dutch Foundation for the Conservation of Irish Bogs. It was then handed over to the State for management as a Nature Reserve.

Hop on a bike and take a spin down the Royal Canal tow path or follow the Mullingar Cycle Route which has 3 options taking in the countryside around Mullingar. Maps are available at www.discoverireland.ie/westmeath or at the tourist office in the Market Square in the town centre.

A new dimension to cycling and walking in Mullingar and its environs is now available with the development of over 32km of the Royal Canal towpath as a walking & cycling route. The Westmeath Royal Canal Greenway stretches from the Meath county boundary to Coolhahay harbour with several access points along the way. Visit Tullynalley Castle & Gardens, home to the Earls of Longford since the 17th century. The old walled gardens have been restored and for children there are ducks, swans, llamas and a special discovery trail.
